Program Description
Cosmetology is a Pivot Point member school. Hours are accrued over two academic years. A fifth semester, or summer hours, may be necessary to achieve the full 1500 hours required by the State of Vermont. The Cosmetology Program covers the theory and application of practical skills related to the cosmetology field. This is a Vermont State Licensed School of Cosmetology Arts and Science regulated by the Vermont State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering and overseen by the Office of Professional Regulations. In the State of Vermont, 1500 clock hours in a School of Cosmetology or 2000 apprenticeship hours are required for candidates to become eligible for the cosmetology licensing examination. Applicants for the exam must be at least 18 years old. Students may begin study in high school, but must wait until they are 18 years old to take the exam.

This program is designed to offer applied academics in the areas of Business and Finance, Human Biology / Cosmetic Chemistry, and Language Arts. Emphasis is placed on worker traits such as customer relations, interpersonal communication, team work, initiative, reliability and professionalism, attire and other workplace readiness skills.

What's Next/Professional Certification Credentials Offered
At the completion of 1500 clock hours, graduates that have their high school diploma or GED and are 18 years of age may apply to sit for the Vermont State License Examination. All students receive specialized training in the OPI nail system and receive OPI Certification. Students may select to work toward certificates of achievement in seven basic areas which include: long hair design, ladies' sculpture, mens' sculpture, perm design, color design, hair design and salon success.

Curriculum Components
Curriculum components include up to 650 clock hours (toward license) in one academic year. The design of the program is for two academic years, for interested, qualified students. Students accepted into the second year work in a client oriented environment, plus continued academic and practical arts studies. The academic component for second year also includes English Language Arts, Science and Business Operations Math. Students may apply to transfer their hours to a postsecondary institution. All students take fire safety training, first aid, CPR and blood borne pathogen training. Students that pass the safety training receive the appropriate certifications.Other curriculum components include:

Shampooing and related chemistry (25 hours)
Waxing (superfluous hair) (15 hours)
Permanent Waving, hair straightening, and related chemistry (350 hours)
Finger waving, pincurls, roller formation, blow-waving, and related chemistry
  (25 hours)
Manicuring and related chemistry (25 hours)
Basic aestheticism, facials, makeup, and related chemistry (50 hours)
Tinting, bleaching, rinse, reconditioning, and related chemistry (300 hours)
Haircutting (300 hours)
Instruction and lectures on sanitation, sterilization, hygiene, anatomy, laws,    rules, and regulations (90 hours)
Professional ethics (95 hours)

Career Academy Opportunity and Rewards
All students at the Center for Technology may seek eligibility for enrollment in a variety of college level courses offered through Champlain College, University of Vermont and the Community College of Vermont. Each course can earn a student three college credits - many of which are accepted by other colleges and universities. Motivated students who take advantage of these advanced placement programs can acquire a full semester toward their college degree.
